The Other "Good War": Afghanistan One Year Later

Okay...so if "regime change" doesn't seem to be helping any of the good villagers in Afghanistan, why would we want to instigate it in Iraq?

[sardonic] Oh, yeah... The U.S. is the supreme model of Democracy! My bad. [/sardonic]

Wishful thinking for a windy, overcast day when one has to contend with a nasty cold: I wish my apartment had come with a fireplace. And I wish it'd snow!

Oh, well - I guess the golf course out back will hafta do... (The sunrises in the morning are gorgeous if you were to watch 'em from our back window; the sun shyly peeking at us from the green hillcrest, between the tall trees... When the fog still covers the ground, it makes the moment seem even koo-eler. Now if only I had a camera...)

Kickball was one of my favorite sports to play as a kid. It turns out they've got kickball leagues for adults springing up all over the country. Woot!

BTW - have you ever noticed how many pictures they have in the Business Section of the folks on the New York Stock Exchange floor? I wonder if every person down there has had their picture taken at one time or another.

Here's a transcript of Bush's speech from tonight for those of you interested.

And a general question: would this really be our first pre-emptive strike against another country or is it because of the circumstances surrounding this situation (i.e. the "War On Terror") that just make it seem that way?

I don't talk much unless I need to, in real life, anyway, so I've finally figured out a good way to get this tongue-tied thing UN-tied: rap.

Free-stylin'.

Flowin'.

Y'know, spittin' rhymes that ain't too sleazy, that're off the heezy, to show that I'm breezy - er, yeah. You get my drift.

I guess I've been hanging out with my brother too long. What he does usually is download an instrumental hip-hop beat off the Net, burn it onto a CD, then pop it into his player. Once he's got a hook on the beat, there he goes with his rhymin'. It's a lot more fun when there're more guys involved, say three or four, 'cause then it's time to start "passing the mic around." It gets hilarious when these guys don't have anything in mind and just start dropping stuff from the top of their heads - and then they usually resort to making fun of each other.

I think it's one of those "you just hafta be there" thangs. It's fun to do, and no matter how many mistakes we make in the rhymin' process, it's a good way to figure out how good of a vocab we have. My prob is that I can get as far as coming up with the rhymes in my head that'll go with the beat - trying to spit out the rhymes is something else entirely.

Little Ewok No. 3 just turned one today. Is it a good thing that she began shaking her head no after she saw me do it? No? (Especially when her grandmother wanted to hold her?) Guess it's also not a good thing that I fed her licorice instead of trying to get her to sleep. Yes, I know, I'm a bad cousin - but an easygoing one, too.

I think Mr. Camping needs to begin considering an early retirement. Or maybe retirement is long overdue.

Who's Mr. Camping? The same Harold Camping who's begun preaching that Christians not go to church anymore and instead tune in to the airwaves to receive the spiritual nourishment and encouragement they need to get through the daily Christian walk.

Sorry, Mr. Camping, I'm not buying it.

You, sir, have forgotten in your push for the "Age of Evangelization" via radio that discipleship is vital after salvation. Believers receive that discipleship usually one-on-one, in person, with another believer or with a group of believers; believers also receive encouragement when they meet with other Christians who've gathered together for fellowship under one roof. (A "church" in this case doesn't even have to resemble the sort with a steeple attached. That's why there's such a thing as cell groups.) And unless you're willing to hire full-time staff members who can disciple people over the phone, I really wouldn't pursue this sort of "doctrine" any further.

But hey, who'm I to try to chastise Mr. Camping? I mean, would the same guy who predicted the world would end in 1994 listen to such admonishment? From the looks of things, I don't think so.

(via Holy Weblog! Can't help it, really, she's been putting up a lot of good stuff lately.)
